The Biternity helps you protecting your digital assets and recovering them in case your wallet is lost, stolen, or damaged. This is because your seed phrase, a set of 12 to 24 words that forms the “password” to your digital assets, is punched into your Biternity plate(s).

When setting up your bitcoin wallet for the first time you have probably written down your seed phrase. Since it not safe to store these words digitally, because your words can then easily be stolen, your wallet will prompt you to write it down on a piece of paper. However paper deteriorates with time and in case of fire, flooding or other disaster(s) your piece of paper is easily destroyed.

By storing your Biternity in a safe place, your seed phrase is 100% offline and only you have access to restore your wallet at any time and access your funds even if your device is lost or damaged.

A seed phrase, also known as a recovery phrase or backup phrase, is a set of words that is used to recover access to a cryptocurrency wallet or other digital asset storage system. Seed phrases typically consist of 12 or 24 words that are generated by the wallet software when a (hardware) wallet is first set up.

The words come from the BIP39 word list. It is important to write down the words in the exact order and keep them safe. The Biternity seed phrase backup helps you to keep your seed phrase safe, even in extreme conditions.

Instead of words, numbers are punched into your Biternity for an extra layer of protection. You can set up your Biternity quick and easy in four simple steps:

1. Write down your recovery words on the conversion sheet.
2. Find the corresponding numbers in the BIP39 word list.
3. Write down the numbers on the conversion sheet.
4. Punch the numbers in the Biternity plate(s).

BIP39 stands for “Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39.” It is a widely used standard for creating and managing cryptocurrency wallets, including Bitcoin wallets and many other cryptocurrencies.  BIP39 defines a method for creating a “mnemonic phrase” or “seed phrase” that can be used to derive a hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet.

The mnemonic phrase generated by BIP39 consists of a series of 12, 18, or 24 words that are randomly chosen from a list of 2,048 pre-defined words. These words are easy to remember and can be used to restore a wallet if the user loses their device or forgets their password.

SLIP39 (Shamir’s Secret Sharing for Mnemonic Codes) is a protocol for securely dividing a mnemonic phrase into multiple “shares,” or fragments, which can be distributed to different parties. For example, a user could split their 24-word mnemonic phrase into 3 shares, where any 2 of the 3 shares are required to reconstruct the phrase. This provides redundancy and resilience against losing any one share, as well as the ability to distribute shares to trusted parties for increased security.
